The Girl Beneath the Water

🌊 Chapter One – The Forbidden River

Long before roads reached the peaceful village of Okwu Nnwere, there flowed a river unlike any other. Its waters were so clear that they reflected the sky like a mirror, making it difficult to tell where the heavens ended and the river began.

The villagers called it Udo River, the River of Silence. During the day, women fetched water from it, fishermen cast their nets into it, and children played happily along its banks. But as soon as the sun began to disappear behind the ancient iroko trees, everyone hurried home.

Every evening, the oldest woman in the village would strike her wooden staff against the ground three times before saying,

"When the river begins to whisper, no child must remain near its waters."

No one questioned her warning. It had been spoken for generations, long before their grandparents were born. Some believed spirits guarded the river. Others believed an ancient kingdom slept beneath its waters. Whatever the truth was, nobody dared to find out.

Nobody...

Except Ada.

Ada was different from the other children. She loved asking questions that no one could answer. Every story the elders told only made her more curious.

"Why is the river forbidden after sunset?" she often asked.

The answer was always the same.

"Some secrets are older than people."

But that answer was never enough for Ada.

One evening, after helping her mother pound yam and fetch firewood, she quietly returned to the riverbank. The sky glowed orange as birds flew back to their nests.

For a while, everything was peaceful.

Then...

The birds suddenly stopped singing.

The wind became still.

Even the trees seemed to hold their breath.

Ada felt the tiny hairs on her arms rise.

Then she heard it.

"Ada..."

She quickly turned around.

No one was there.

Again the voice came.

"Ada..."

This time, it came from the river.

The calm water slowly rippled even though there was no wind.

Tiny circles spread across the surface until the entire river seemed to breathe.

Then...

Two glowing eyes appeared beneath the water.

Watching.

Waiting.

Without blinking.

Ada stood frozen.

She had heard the stories all her life.

But no story had ever prepared her for the moment...

...the river looked back.

πŸŒ™ Chapter Two – The Eyes Beneath the Water

Ada's heart pounded so loudly she was certain the entire forest could hear it.

The glowing eyes beneath the water never blinked. They simply watched her, calm and patient, as though they had been waiting for this very moment.

Every part of her wanted to run.

Her grandmother's warnings echoed inside her mind.

"If the river ever calls your name, do not answer it."

Ada slowly stepped backward.

The eyes moved.

Not quickly.

Not threateningly.

They followed her every movement beneath the surface of the water.

Then something extraordinary happened.

The river became perfectly still once again.

The ripples disappeared.

The glowing eyes sank deeper until they vanished into the darkness below.

Ada stood there for several moments, unable to breathe.

Had she imagined everything?

Just as she turned to leave, a small object floated gently toward the riverbank.

It was unlike anything she had ever seen.

It looked like a tiny shell, yet it shimmered with colours that changed every secondβ€”blue, green, silver and gold.

Curiosity overcame fear.

Ada knelt beside the water and carefully picked it up.

The moment her fingers touched the shell, a soft warmth spread through her hand.

Then she heard the voice again.

"Return tomorrow... alone."

This time the voice was clearer.

Gentle.

Sad.

It did not sound like a monster.

It sounded...

Like someone asking for help.

Ada looked across the dark river one last time before running back toward the village.

Hidden beneath the silent water...

Someone smiled.

🌳 Chapter Three – The Secret Beneath the River

Ada hardly slept that night.

The strange shell rested beneath her pillow, glowing faintly whenever the moonlight entered through the small window of her family's hut.

Again and again she heard the gentle voice in her mind.

"Return tomorrow... alone."

At sunrise, she almost told her mother everything. But she remembered the fear in the elders' faces whenever the river was mentioned.

If she spoke now, they would never allow her to return.

So she kept the secret to herself.

The following evening, Ada quietly slipped away from the village before sunset. The familiar path to Udo River felt different now. Every sound seemed louder. Every shadow appeared to be watching her.

When she reached the riverbank, the water was perfectly still.

Nothing happened.

She waited.

Minutes passed.

Just as she began to wonder if the voice had been nothing more than a dream, the shell in her pocket became warm.

It glowed brighter than before.

Slowly, the river began to ripple.

A soft blue light spread beneath the surface, growing brighter until it illuminated the dark water like moonlight trapped beneath the river.

Then, for the very first time...

A hand emerged from the water.

It was pale, delicate, and covered in tiny drops that sparkled like diamonds.

Ada gasped but did not run.

The hand slowly reached toward herβ€”not to grab her, but to offer something.

It was an old necklace made from smooth white river stones, tied together with a faded blue cord.

The moment Ada touched it, strange pictures flashed before her eyes.

She saw a beautiful city beneath the river.

She saw people laughing and dancing underwater.

She saw darkness swallowing the city.

Then...

She saw a young girl crying alone beneath the river.

The vision disappeared as quickly as it had come.

The river became silent once more.

Only one whisper remained.

"Please... help us."

βš”οΈ Chapter Four – The Lost Kingdom Beneath the Water

Ada stumbled backwards, clutching the necklace tightly against her chest. Her heart raced as the strange visions replayed in her mind.

The underwater city...

The frightened people...

The lonely girl...

None of it could have been a dream.

She looked toward the river once more.

This time, the water slowly parted, not with crashing waves but as gently as curtains being drawn aside.

A narrow path of glowing blue stones appeared beneath the surface, stretching into the river's mysterious depths.

The shell in Ada's pocket shone brighter than ever before.

It was inviting her forward.

Fear whispered for her to run.

Curiosity urged her to stay.

Taking a deep breath, Ada stepped onto the glowing stones.

To her surprise, she did not sink.

Each stone lit up beneath her feet, guiding her farther beneath the river.

Instead of water filling her lungs, she found herself surrounded by a shimmering bubble of warm air.

Fish swam peacefully around her.

Colourful plants waved like dancers.

Tiny glowing creatures floated through the water, lighting the path ahead.

Soon the glowing trail ended before enormous gates carved from smooth crystal.

Although they had clearly stood there for centuries, they slowly opened on their own.

Beyond them stood the city from her vision.

Its tall towers were covered in glowing vines.

Broken statues lay scattered across silent streets.

Beautiful houses stood empty, as though everyone had vanished in a single night.

Only the sound of flowing water echoed through the forgotten kingdom.

Ada walked carefully through the deserted streets.

Suddenly she noticed fresh footprints.

Someone else had been there.

She followed them until they stopped before an ancient stone throne.

Resting upon the throne was an old crown covered in pearls and blue gemstones.

The moment Ada reached toward it, a voice called softly behind her.

"You were never meant to find this place..."

Ada slowly turned around.

Standing before her was the mysterious figure from the river.

For the first time...

Ada finally came face to face with the girl beneath the water.

✨ Chapter Five – The Girl Beneath the Water

The mysterious girl smiled gently, though sadness still filled her bright blue eyes.

"I have waited many years for someone brave enough to find us," she said softly.

Ada stared at her in amazement.

"You... called my name?"

The girl nodded.

"My name is Amara. I was once the princess of this kingdom."

She slowly looked around the silent city.

"Long ago, this place was filled with laughter. Children played in the streets, musicians sang every evening, and our people lived in peace beside the river."

"But one day, greed entered our kingdom."

A powerful chief from a distant land wanted the magical waters of Udo River for himself. When my father refused to surrender them, the chief sought the help of a dark sorcerer."

"The sorcerer placed a terrible curse upon our kingdom."

"Before sunrise the next day, the river swallowed our city whole."

"Our people were trapped beneath the water, unable to leave and unable to grow old."

"For generations we have waited for someone with a fearless heart and a kind spirit."

She looked directly at Ada.

"The river chose you."

Amara gently placed the ancient crown into Ada's hands.

"Only someone from the world above can return what was stolen."

Following Amara's instructions, Ada carried the glowing crown to the centre of the forgotten city, where an ancient stone stood beneath a waterfall.

As she placed the crown upon the stone, the necklace around her neck began to shine brighter than the sun.

The ground trembled.

The dark water surrounding the city slowly became crystal clear.

The broken houses repaired themselves.

Flowers bloomed once again.

The people of the underwater kingdom slowly appeared throughout the streets, smiling and embracing one another.

The curse had finally been broken.

Amara's eyes filled with joyful tears.

"You have given us back our home," she whispered.

Before Ada could answer, the river's magic surrounded her in a warm golden light.

Moments later, she found herself standing once again beneath the old baobab tree where her journey had begun.

Morning sunlight sparkled across the peaceful river.

The mysterious shell and necklace had disappeared.

Only one thing remained beside her.

A single blue river stone.

Ada smiled.

She never told anyone everything that happened beneath the river.

But from that day forward, the whispers of Udo River were never heard again.

The villagers noticed that the river no longer filled them with fear.

Instead, it brought peace.

🌿 Moral of the Story

True courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to do what is right despite being afraid. A kind heart, honesty, and selflessness can overcome even the oldest curses, while greed always brings destruction.
