The Ghost That Wore Her Face

👻 Chapter One – The Woman in the Glass

Lagos was never truly quiet.

Cars filled the roads every morning.

People hurried to work.

Street traders called out to customers.

Music floated from buses and small shops.

The city never seemed to sleep.

Ada had lived there all her life.

She worked in a small fashion shop where she sewed clothes for people.

Everyone liked Ada.

She smiled often.

She greeted everyone.

She never liked trouble.

Every evening after work, she walked home through the same streets.

It was quicker than waiting for a bus.

One rainy evening, the whole city looked different.

The roads were wet.

Street lights reflected on the water like tiny stars.

Most people had already gone home.

Ada opened her umbrella and continued walking.

As she passed an old building, she noticed something strange.

A broken shop window stood beside the road.

She looked into the glass without thinking.

She saw herself.

Or...

She thought she did.

The woman inside the glass looked exactly like her.

Same face.

Same clothes.

Same hairstyle.

But something was wrong.

The woman was smiling.

Ada wasn't.

Her heart skipped.

She quickly stepped away from the window.

When she looked again...

The reflection was normal.

She laughed softly.

"I must be tired."

She continued walking.

When she reached home, her younger brother was watching television.

Her mother was already serving dinner.

Everything felt normal again.

She forgot about the strange reflection.

That night...

Ada woke up suddenly.

Someone had whispered her name.

"Ada..."

She quickly sat up.

The room was dark.

Everyone else was asleep.

She listened carefully.

Nothing.

She shook her head.

"It was only a dream."

She lay down again.

The next morning she stood before the mirror while getting ready for work.

She adjusted her hair.

She smiled.

The mirror smiled back.

Then...

The reflection slowly stopped smiling.

Ada was still smiling.

Her heart almost stopped.

The woman inside the mirror quietly raised one finger.

She pointed behind Ada.

Ada turned around immediately.

Nobody was there.

When she looked back at the mirror...

The reflection was smiling again.

Just like nothing had happened.

Ada slowly stepped backward.

For the first time in her life...

She was afraid of her own face.

🌙 End of Chapter One

🌫 Chapter Two – Someone Else Was Living Her Life

Ada tried to forget what happened in the mirror.

She told herself she was only tired.

Maybe she needed more sleep.

Maybe she had been working too much.

That was the only thing that made sense.

She picked up her bag and left for work.

The city was already busy.

Cars were blowing their horns.

People rushed from one place to another.

Everything looked normal.

But Ada did not feel normal.

She kept thinking about the woman in the mirror.

At the fashion shop, her friend Tolu smiled as soon as she saw her.

"Ada, you left so early yesterday."

Ada looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Tolu laughed.

"You came back after work."

"You said you forgot your phone."

Ada stopped sewing.

"I never came back."

Tolu frowned.

"Don't joke like that."

"You even stood right here."

"You smiled at me."

"You picked up your phone and left."

Ada slowly shook her head.

"My phone was with me all night."

The smile disappeared from Tolu's face.

She stared at Ada for several seconds.

"You are serious?"

Ada nodded.

A cold feeling settled inside both of them.

Neither of them spoke again.

Later that afternoon, Ada went to buy food during her break.

The woman selling rice smiled warmly.

"My daughter, you're back again."

Ada blinked.

"I haven't been here today."

The woman laughed.

"You young people like jokes."

"You bought food here less than one hour ago."

Ada's hands became cold.

"I didn't."

The woman slowly stopped smiling.

"You even wore those same clothes."

Ada quietly stepped away from the stall.

She was no longer hungry.

Something was terribly wrong.

That evening she rushed home.

As soon as she entered the house, her younger brother looked at her strangely.

"I thought you already came home."

Ada dropped her bag.

"What?"

"You came in."

"You went into your room."

"I even called your name."

"But you ignored me."

Ada slowly walked to her bedroom.

The door was still locked.

Exactly the way she left it that morning.

She opened it carefully.

Nothing had moved.

Everything was in its place.

She sat on the bed.

Her heart was beating fast.

People were seeing her...

Even when she wasn't there.

Late that night, rain began to fall.

Ada could not sleep.

She kept thinking about everything everyone had said.

Then...

She heard soft footsteps outside her room.

Slow...

Steady...

Almost like someone was walking through the house.

She quietly stood up.

She opened her bedroom door.

The hallway was empty.

She looked toward the sitting room.

Nobody.

Then she looked toward the mirror hanging at the end of the hallway.

A woman stood inside it.

She looked exactly like Ada.

But this time...

She slowly smiled.

Then she whispered,

"Everyone already believes I'm you."

🌙 End of Chapter Two

🌑 Chapter Three – The Woman Nobody Could Catch

Ada could not breathe.

The woman inside the mirror smiled exactly the way she smiled.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Same voice.

Only one thing was different.

Her smile felt empty.

Cold.

Like someone pretending to be human.

Ada blinked.

The woman disappeared.

The mirror showed only her own frightened face again.

She ran back into her room and locked the door.

Her hands would not stop shaking.

She stayed awake until morning.

When the sun finally came up, she made a decision.

She had to tell someone.

Not just anyone.

Someone who would believe her.

She called Tolu.

"Please meet me after work."

Tolu could hear the fear in her voice.

"I'll be there."

That evening they met in a small restaurant near the market.

Ada told her everything.

The mirror.

The whispers.

People seeing another Ada.

The woman who looked exactly like her.

Tolu listened without laughing.

When Ada finished speaking, she quietly said,

"I believe you."

Ada almost cried.

"You do?"

Tolu nodded.

"My grandmother used to tell stories about spirits that steal faces."

"They don't take your body."

"They take your life."

Ada felt cold again.

"What happens if they succeed?"

Tolu became quiet.

"My grandmother said..."

"...when everyone believes the ghost is the real person..."

"...the real person slowly disappears."

Ada stared at her.

She wished it was only another scary story.

Just then...

Someone entered the restaurant.

People immediately smiled and greeted her.

"Good evening, Ada!"

Ada turned around.

Her heart stopped.

Another Ada stood at the entrance.

She wore the same dress.

The same hairstyle.

Even the small necklace around her neck was the same.

Customers greeted her warmly.

The waitress brought her a chair.

Nobody noticed anything strange.

Nobody saw two Adas.

Only Ada and Tolu.

The other Ada slowly turned her head.

She looked directly at the real Ada.

Then...

She smiled.

It was the same smile from the mirror.

Without saying a word, she stood up and walked out of the restaurant.

Ada immediately ran after her.

She pushed through the crowd outside.

She could still see the woman walking ahead.

She was not running.

She simply walked calmly.

Almost as if she wanted Ada to follow.

Ada hurried faster.

She was only a few steps away.

She reached out.

Her fingers almost touched the woman's shoulder.

Suddenly...

The street lights went out.

Everything became dark.

Only for one second.

When the lights came back...

The woman was gone.

She had disappeared.

As if she had never been there.

But on the ground...

Ada found something.

A small photograph.

It showed a woman.

She looked exactly like Ada.

The picture was old.

Very old.

And written on the back were four chilling words.

"She never escaped me."

🌙 End of Chapter Three

🌒 Chapter Four – The Photograph That Should Not Exist

Ada held the old photograph tightly.

She could not stop looking at it.

The woman inside the picture looked exactly like her.

Not almost.

Exactly.

Even the tiny mark beside her left eye was there.

The paper felt old.

Very old.

The edges were torn.

The picture had turned slightly brown with age.

It could not have been taken recently.

Tolu finally caught up with her.

She looked down at the photograph.

Her face slowly changed.

"Where did you get this?"

Ada pointed down the empty street.

"The woman dropped it."

Tolu looked around.

There was nobody.

Only people rushing home after work.

Cars passed by.

Nobody seemed to notice anything strange.

Tolu slowly turned the picture over.

Those same words were still written on the back.

"She never escaped me."

Neither of them spoke.

The words made no sense.

Yet they felt frightening.

That night Ada could not sleep again.

She placed the photograph inside her drawer.

She even locked it.

Somehow...

She felt safer that way.

The next morning she opened the drawer.

The photograph was gone.

She searched everywhere.

Inside the drawer.

Under the bed.

Inside her wardrobe.

Nothing.

She was sure she had locked it there.

Suddenly she noticed something sitting on her dressing table.

The photograph.

It was standing upright against the mirror.

She slowly walked toward it.

This time...

The woman inside the picture was no longer looking at the camera.

She was looking sideways.

At Ada.

Ada quickly dropped the picture.

It landed face down on the floor.

Her mother called from outside.

"Ada!"

"Hurry up or you'll be late."

She quickly picked up her bag.

She left the picture where it was.

She did not even look back.

Work was worse that day.

Customers kept greeting her.

But not because they had just seen her.

Because...

They believed they had already spoken to her.

One woman smiled.

"Thank you for helping me this morning."

Ada frowned.

"I've just arrived."

The woman laughed.

"You young people joke too much."

"You measured my cloth yourself."

She even showed Ada the measurement book.

The measurements were written there.

In Ada's own handwriting.

Ada stared at the page.

Every letter looked exactly like hers.

Every number.

Every line.

She knew she had never touched that book.

Someone else had.

Someone wearing her face.

That evening, as she walked home, she noticed something across the road.

A woman stood beside a bus stop.

She was wearing Ada's favourite blue dress.

The same dress Ada was wearing.

She slowly lifted her head.

Their eyes met.

The woman smiled.

Then she quietly whispered without making a sound.

Ada somehow understood every word.

"Soon..."

"...nobody will know which one is real."

🌙 End of Chapter Four

🌑 Chapter Five – The House That Remembered Her

Ada stopped going out after work.

She no longer visited friends.

She no longer walked around the neighbourhood.

She wanted to stay where she felt safe.

But even her own house no longer felt like home.

Every mirror made her uncomfortable.

Every shiny window made her nervous.

Sometimes she walked past a television screen and quickly looked away.

She did not want to see another version of herself smiling back.

Three days passed.

Things only became worse.

People greeted her before she greeted them.

Some even thanked her for conversations she never had.

One old woman held her hand.

"Thank you for helping me carry my bags yesterday."

Ada forced a smile.

Inside, fear was growing.

Someone was living her life.

And nobody could tell the difference.

That evening, Tolu arrived at Ada's house.

She looked serious.

"I spoke to my grandmother."

Ada quickly invited her inside.

"What did she say?"

Tolu sat down quietly.

"My grandmother says there are places where spirits leave part of themselves behind."

"Old houses."

"Abandoned buildings."

"Places people stop remembering."

Ada listened carefully.

"She believes the ghost wants you to follow it."

Ada remembered the woman disappearing near the old street.

The broken shop window.

The strange photograph.

Everything had started there.

Without saying another word, both girls decided to return.

The following afternoon they stood outside the abandoned building.

It looked older than before.

The walls were cracked.

The roof had partly fallen in.

Tall weeds covered the entrance.

Nobody seemed to come near it.

A small sign hung on the gate.

Most of the letters had faded away.

Only two words could still be read.

"Mirror House."

Tolu looked at Ada.

"I don't like this."

Ada nodded.

"Neither do I."

"But I have to know."

They slowly stepped inside.

Dust covered everything.

Broken chairs lay on the floor.

Spider webs filled the corners.

The air smelled old.

Very old.

As they walked deeper into the building, Ada noticed something strange.

There were mirrors everywhere.

Small mirrors.

Large mirrors.

Broken mirrors hanging on cracked walls.

Some were covered with dust.

Others looked perfectly clean.

Yet nobody could explain why.

Suddenly...

One mirror became bright.

Not from sunlight.

From inside.

Ada slowly walked closer.

She saw herself.

Then another Ada appeared beside the first one.

Then another.

Soon...

The whole mirror was filled with dozens of Adas.

Every single one looked exactly the same.

Every single one smiled.

At the same time.

Then all of them spoke together.

"Only one of us can leave."

🌙 End of Chapter Five

🌒 Chapter Six – The Name the Ghost Stole

Ada could not move.

The mirrors surrounded her.

Everywhere she looked...

She saw her own face.

Dozens of them.

All smiling.

All watching her.

Tolu grabbed Ada's arm.

"We need to leave."

But the door behind them slammed shut by itself.

The loud bang echoed through the empty house.

Both girls jumped.

The room suddenly became colder.

Very cold.

Their breath could be seen in the air.

One by one...

The reflections disappeared.

Until only one Ada remained inside the biggest mirror.

She slowly stepped forward.

Not outside the mirror.

Inside it.

As though she was walking through another world.

She stopped close to the glass.

Then she placed her hand against it.

Ada looked down.

Without thinking...

She placed her own hand on the same spot.

The glass was freezing.

Then...

The woman spoke.

"My name was never Ghost."

Ada frowned.

The woman continued.

"My name was Amara."

The name sounded familiar.

Very familiar.

Tolu whispered,

"My grandmother once mentioned someone called Amara..."

The woman nodded slowly.

"I lived in this city many years ago."

"I was happy."

"I trusted the wrong people."

"They betrayed me."

"They took everything."

"My home."

"My family."

"My name."

Her eyes slowly filled with sadness.

"When nobody remembered me anymore..."

"I became trapped."

Ada listened quietly.

For the first time...

She no longer saw a monster.

She saw someone who had suffered.

Someone who had been forgotten.

"But why are you taking my face?"

Amara lowered her eyes.

"Because nobody remembers mine."

"I thought..."

"If I borrowed another life..."

"I would stop being alone."

Tolu slowly stepped forward.

"But you're making Ada disappear."

Amara closed her eyes.

"I know."

"I tried to stop."

"But once the curse begins..."

"It never stops on its own."

Suddenly the mirrors began shaking.

Cracks slowly spread across the glass.

The whole house trembled.

Amara looked frightened.

"No..."

"It knows you've learned the truth."

Ada looked confused.

"Who?"

Amara slowly raised her eyes.

"It isn't the house."

"It isn't the mirrors."

"They're only its prison."

Something heavy began walking upstairs.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Each step shook the floor beneath them.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The lights inside every mirror suddenly went dark.

Amara whispered,

"It has finally woken up..."

"And this time..."

"...it has come for both of you."

🌙 End of Chapter Six

🌕 Chapter Seven – The Face Behind the Darkness

The footsteps stopped.

The whole house became silent.

Too silent.

Ada could hear her own heartbeat.

Tolu slowly moved closer to her.

Neither of them dared to speak.

Then...

A long scraping sound echoed from upstairs.

It sounded like heavy claws dragging across the floor.

Slowly.

Patiently.

Coming closer.

Amara backed away from the mirror.

Her face was filled with fear.

"It knows we're here."

Ada whispered,

"What is it?"

Amara looked at her.

"It has no real name."

"It feeds on forgotten people."

"The longer someone is forgotten..."

"...the stronger it becomes."

Another loud scrape echoed above them.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Dust rained down from the ceiling.

The old staircase began to shake.

Then...

Something appeared at the top.

It was covered in darkness.

Nobody could clearly see its body.

Only two bright white eyes stared down at them.

It slowly smiled.

The smile was far too wide.

Far too long.

Tolu grabbed Ada's hand tightly.

"Don't look at its eyes."

Ada quickly lowered her head.

But she had already seen them.

Suddenly strange memories filled her mind.

She saw people she had never met.

Old streets.

Broken houses.

Children crying.

Then...

She saw Amara.

Not as a ghost.

As a young woman.

Laughing.

Living happily with her family.

Then everything changed.

People accused her of things she never did.

Her neighbours turned against her.

Her own friends stopped speaking to her.

Little by little...

Everybody forgot her.

When the last person forgot her name...

The darkness found her.

Ada suddenly understood.

Amara had never wanted to become a ghost.

She had been trapped.

The creature slowly walked down the stairs.

Its footsteps made the wooden floor groan.

The mirrors around the room began turning black.

One after another.

Every reflection disappeared.

Only darkness remained inside the glass.

The creature stopped a few steps away.

Its deep voice filled the room.

"She belongs to me."

It pointed one long finger toward Amara.

"And soon..."

"...the new one will belong to me too."

Ada stepped forward before she even realised it.

"No."

The creature laughed.

"You cannot stop forgetting."

"People always forget."

"That is why I never lose."

Ada looked at Amara.

Then she remembered something.

The photograph.

The words.

The ghost had not wanted to steal her life.

She only wanted someone...

To remember her name.

Ada took a deep breath.

Then she shouted as loudly as she could.

"Your name is Amara!"

The room suddenly shook.

The creature stopped smiling.

For the first time...

It looked afraid.

🌙 End of Chapter Seven

🌅 Chapter Eight – A Name Remembered Forever

The whole house shook.

The mirrors rattled loudly.

Cracks spread across every wall.

The dark creature stepped backward.

Its glowing eyes became smaller.

It stared at Ada.

Then at Amara.

Its voice no longer sounded powerful.

"No..."

"She was forgotten..."

Ada stood her ground.

She spoke loudly again.

"Her name is Amara."

Tolu joined in.

"Amara."

The old house echoed the name.

Amara.

Amara.

Amara.

Something beautiful happened.

The darkness surrounding Amara slowly disappeared.

Her face became brighter.

The sadness in her eyes faded.

For the first time in many years...

She smiled.

A real smile.

The creature screamed.

Its body began breaking apart into black smoke.

It reached toward Amara one last time.

But it could no longer touch her.

The mirrors started glowing with warm golden light.

One after another...

They shattered.

Not into dangerous pieces.

But into tiny glowing lights.

The lights floated through the room like little stars.

The creature gave one final cry.

Then...

It disappeared.

The cold air was gone.

The house became quiet.

Peaceful.

Sunlight entered through the broken windows.

For the first time, the building no longer felt frightening.

Amara slowly stepped out of the largest mirror.

She was no longer transparent.

She looked calm.

Almost human again.

She looked at Ada with grateful eyes.

"You remembered me."

Ada smiled.

"No one deserves to be forgotten."

A soft golden light surrounded Amara.

She looked toward the sky.

Then back at Ada.

"My story is finally over."

She slowly faded into hundreds of tiny lights.

The lights floated out through the open roof.

Higher.

Higher.

Until they disappeared into the bright morning sky.

Tolu smiled softly.

"I think she's free now."

Ada nodded.

"Yes."

They quietly walked out of the old Mirror House together.

Behind them...

The old building slowly collapsed into dust.

Only the empty ground remained.

As if the house had never existed.

Years later, people sometimes spoke about a strange abandoned building that had disappeared overnight.

Nobody could explain it.

But whenever Ada heard someone mention forgotten places...

She always smiled.

Because she remembered someone the world almost lost forever.

🌿 Moral of the Story

A person truly disappears only when nobody remembers them. Kindness, compassion and remembering others can bring light where darkness once lived.
