The Dragon's Final Guardian

🐉 Chapter One – The Man on the Empty Land

People in Grey Valley feared one place.

Nobody went there.

Not in the morning.

Not in the afternoon.

And never at night.

Far beyond the dry grass stood a lonely mountain.

Old people called it Dragon Hill.

Children were warned never to look at it for too long.

Some said a dragon slept inside.

Others said it never slept at all.

No one knew the truth.

No one had returned after climbing the hill.

One cold morning...

A young traveler walked into Grey Valley.

His name was Rowan.

He carried only a small bag.

His boots were covered with dust.

He looked tired.

But his eyes were full of courage.

The people watched him quietly.

Nobody smiled.

An old woman slowly walked to him.

She looked at his face for a long time.

Then she whispered,

"Turn back while you still can."

Rowan frowned.

"Why?"

The old woman pointed toward Dragon Hill.

"That place eats brave men."

"It has taken kings."

"It has taken soldiers."

"It even took my son."

Rowan became quiet.

He looked at the mountain.

It stood high above the clouds.

Dark.

Silent.

Waiting.

The old woman grabbed his hand.

"If you hear your name from that hill..."

"Do not answer."

"If you see golden eyes..."

"Do not look back."

"And if the dragon speaks..."

She stopped talking.

Her face suddenly became pale.

Rowan looked confused.

"What happens if the dragon speaks?"

The old woman slowly stepped away.

She refused to answer.

Instead...

She handed Rowan an old silver key.

It was cold.

Very cold.

"You'll know when to use it."

Before Rowan could ask another question...

The ground shook.

Not a little.

The whole valley trembled.

Birds flew into the sky.

Dogs started barking.

Everyone ran inside their homes.

Rowan stood still.

Then...

A loud roar echoed from Dragon Hill.

It was so powerful that even the clouds moved.

Something...

Had just woken up.

🌙 End of Chapter One

⚔ Chapter Two – The Eyes in the Mist

The roar did not stop.

It rolled across the valley again.

Every window closed.

Every door was locked.

Only Rowan stayed outside.

He looked at Dragon Hill.

The top of the mountain was covered with thick mist.

Then...

Something moved inside it.

Not a bird.

Not a man.

Something much bigger.

Rowan held the silver key tightly.

His heart was beating fast.

But he kept walking.

One step.

Then another.

Soon he reached the foot of the hill.

The air felt strange.

It was cold.

Too cold.

Even the wind was quiet.

No insects.

No birds.

Nothing.

Then he saw them.

Huge footprints.

Fresh ones.

Each one was bigger than his whole body.

He slowly followed them.

The path became narrow.

Tall rocks stood on both sides.

It felt like someone was watching him.

He turned around.

Nobody.

He walked again.

Then...

He heard a whisper.

"Rowan..."

He froze.

The old woman's warning came back to his mind.

"If you hear your name... do not answer."

He kept walking.

Again the voice came.

"Rowan..."

This time it sounded closer.

Like someone was standing behind him.

His body wanted to turn.

But he refused.

He looked straight ahead.

Suddenly...

The mist opened.

There was an old stone gate.

It was broken.

Covered with vines.

Above it were strange words carved into the rock.

Rowan could not read them.

The silver key in his hand became warm.

Very warm.

Before he could understand why...

Two glowing golden eyes opened in the darkness beyond the gate.

They were not blinking.

They were looking only at him.

Then a deep voice shook the mountain.

"So... another guardian has finally come."

🌙 End of Chapter Two

🔥 Chapter Three – The Dragon's Warning

Rowan stood still.

The golden eyes never left him.

The deep voice echoed again.

"So..."

"They finally sent someone."

Rowan swallowed.

His mouth felt dry.

He wanted to run.

But his feet stayed where they were.

The mist slowly moved away.

A giant shape appeared.

It was bigger than Rowan had ever imagined.

Dark green scales covered its body.

Its wings folded behind its back.

Smoke escaped from its nose.

The dragon slowly lowered its head.

Its eyes met Rowan's.

They were not angry.

They looked...

Sad.

Very sad.

Rowan finally found his voice.

"Are... are you the dragon?"

The great beast nodded.

The ground shook.

"I have been waiting."

"For many years."

Rowan looked confused.

"Waiting for me?"

The dragon looked at the silver key.

It smiled a little.

"Not for you."

"For the one who carries the key."

Rowan slowly opened his hand.

The silver key was glowing.

The dragon sighed.

"The key has chosen again."

Before Rowan could ask another question...

A loud horn echoed across the mountain.

The dragon quickly lifted its head.

Its peaceful face changed.

It became serious.

The dragon looked far into the valley.

"They found you."

Rowan frowned.

"Who?"

The dragon did not answer.

Instead...

Heavy footsteps came from behind Rowan.

Many footsteps.

Metal touched metal.

Clang...

Clang...

Clang...

Rowan slowly turned around.

More than twenty soldiers stood at the stone gate.

Each one carried a sword.

Their captain stepped forward.

He pointed his blade at the dragon.

"There it is!"

"Kill the beast!"

Rowan quickly stood in front of the dragon.

"Wait!"

"It isn't attacking anyone!"

The captain laughed.

"That's exactly what the last guardian said."

Rowan's heart skipped.

"The last guardian?"

The captain smiled.

A cold smile.

"He died protecting that monster."

The dragon slowly closed its eyes.

As if hearing those words brought back old pain.

Then it whispered,

"No..."

"He did not die..."

"He was betrayed."

🌙 End of Chapter Three

🏰 Chapter Four – The Guardian Who Never Returned

The mountain became quiet.

Nobody moved.

The soldiers held their swords tightly.

The dragon opened its eyes again.

It looked at Rowan.

Then it spoke softly.

"They never told you the truth."

The captain shouted,

"Do not listen to it!"

"It fills men's heads with lies!"

Rowan looked from the captain...

To the dragon.

Something did not feel right.

The dragon had many chances to attack.

But it never did.

Instead...

It only watched.

The captain raised his sword.

"Archers!"

More soldiers stepped forward.

Each one aimed an arrow at the dragon.

The dragon did not move.

It simply closed its eyes.

Rowan stepped in front of it.

"Stop!"

"If you shoot..."

"You'll hit me first."

The soldiers looked at one another.

Even the captain hesitated.

Then an old soldier slowly walked forward.

His beard was white.

His hands were shaking.

He stared at Rowan.

Then he stared at the silver key.

His face suddenly changed.

"It can't be..."

He slowly dropped his sword.

The captain frowned.

"What are you doing?"

The old soldier pointed at Rowan.

"That key..."

"I've seen it before."

Everyone became silent.

The old soldier took a deep breath.

"Thirty years ago..."

"There was another guardian."

"He carried the same key."

"He stood exactly where this boy is standing now."

The captain shook his head.

"Enough!"

But the old soldier kept talking.

His eyes became wet.

"We were told the dragon killed him."

"...but that wasn't true."

Rowan looked at him.

"What happened?"

The old soldier lowered his head.

His voice became weak.

"Our own king..."

"...ordered his death."

The captain shouted,

"Silence!"

But it was too late.

Every soldier had heard.

Some slowly lowered their weapons.

The dragon quietly opened its eyes.

It whispered,

"I told you..."

"He was betrayed."

Suddenly...

A loud horn sounded again.

This time...

It came from the valley below.

Hundreds of footsteps echoed toward the mountain.

The old soldier looked down the hill.

His face turned pale.

"The King..."

"He's coming himself."

🌙 End of Chapter Four

🗝 Chapter Five – The King's Secret

The sound of horses filled the mountain.

Rowan walked to the edge of the hill.

Below...

Hundreds of soldiers were climbing.

They carried shields.

Long spears.

And bright swords.

At the front rode one man.

He wore shining golden armor.

A long red cape danced behind him.

A golden crown sat on his head.

The King had come.

The soldiers around Rowan quickly bowed.

Only Rowan remained standing.

The dragon stayed behind him.

Watching quietly.

The King stopped his horse.

His sharp eyes looked at Rowan.

Then...

He looked at the silver key.

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But Rowan noticed.

The King knew that key.

Very well.

"So..."

"The key has found another fool."

Rowan frowned.

"I am not a fool."

The King laughed.

A cold laugh.

"The last guardian said the same thing."

Rowan looked at him.

"What really happened to him?"

The mountain became quiet.

The King slowly climbed down from his horse.

He walked toward Rowan.

Step...

Step...

Step...

He stopped only a few feet away.

Then he smiled.

"He chose the dragon..."

"...instead of his own king."

Rowan shook his head.

"No."

"You killed him."

The King's smile disappeared.

His eyes became hard.

"Watch your words, boy."

The old soldier stepped forward.

His voice trembled.

"Your Majesty..."

"We all know the truth now."

The King slowly turned toward him.

Without saying a word...

He pulled out his sword.

One quick move.

The old soldier fell.

The mountain went silent.

Everyone stared.

Nobody expected it.

The King cleaned the blood from his sword.

"Anyone else?"

No one answered.

Fear returned.

The dragon lowered its head.

Smoke escaped from its nose.

Not from anger.

From sadness.

The King pointed his sword at the dragon.

"Today..."

"...this beast dies."

The dragon finally spoke.

"I have protected your kingdom..."

"...since before your grandfather was born."

The King laughed again.

"And today..."

"...your story ends."

He raised his sword high.

The soldiers lifted their weapons.

Rowan held the silver key tightly.

Suddenly...

The key began to glow brighter than ever before.

So bright...

That everyone covered their eyes.

Then...

A loud cracking sound came from inside Dragon Hill.

The whole mountain began to split apart.

🌙 End of Chapter Five

🌋 Chapter Six – The Heart of the Mountain

The whole mountain shook.

Huge rocks rolled down the hill.

The soldiers lost their balance.

Some fell.

Some dropped their swords.

The King looked around in shock.

Another loud crack echoed.

Dragon Hill was opening.

Right in the middle.

A bright blue light poured out from inside.

It lit the whole mountain.

Nobody had ever seen anything like it.

The dragon slowly walked toward the opening.

It looked peaceful.

Almost happy.

Rowan followed behind.

The King shouted,

"Stop them!"

The soldiers rushed forward.

But the ground shook again.

A wall of stone rose between them.

Nobody could cross.

Only Rowan...

And the dragon...

Reached the opening.

Inside was a huge cave.

The walls were covered with shining blue crystals.

In the middle stood a giant stone.

It looked like a throne.

Above it floated a bright blue flame.

It never moved.

It never burned out.

The dragon bowed its head.

"This..."

"...is the Heart of the Mountain."

Rowan looked around in amazement.

"So this place is real."

The dragon nodded.

"It has protected this kingdom for hundreds of years."

"The Heart gives life to this land."

"If it dies..."

"The kingdom dies too."

Rowan looked at the blue flame.

It was beautiful.

Then...

He heard footsteps.

Heavy footsteps.

The King had found another way inside.

He walked into the cave.

His eyes were fixed on the blue flame.

Not on Rowan.

Not on the dragon.

Only the flame.

He smiled.

A greedy smile.

"So..."

"This is where all the power comes from."

The dragon stepped in front of the flame.

"You must not touch it."

The King laughed.

"I wasn't planning to protect it."

"I came to own it."

He slowly raised his sword.

The blade pointed straight at the blue flame.

Rowan's heart raced.

"If he destroys it..."

The dragon whispered,

"Everything will end."

The King charged forward.

His sword came down with all its strength.

Rowan jumped to stop him.

But he was too late.

The sword struck the blue flame.

The entire cave exploded with light.

🌙 End of Chapter Six

👑 Chapter Seven – The Guardian's Choice

The bright light filled the whole cave.

Nobody could see anything.

Rowan covered his eyes.

The King was thrown backward.

His sword flew from his hand.

The cave shook harder than before.

Cracks spread across the walls.

Huge stones fell from above.

The dragon spread its wings.

It quickly covered Rowan.

The falling rocks hit the dragon instead.

Boom!

Boom!

Boom!

Dust filled the air.

When the light slowly faded...

Rowan looked up.

The dragon was still standing.

But something was wrong.

Blood slowly ran down its side.

One of its wings was badly hurt.

Rowan rushed to it.

"You are hurt!"

The dragon smiled weakly.

"A guardian protects..."

"...no matter the cost."

Rowan shook his head.

"There must be another way."

The dragon looked at the blue flame.

It had become smaller.

Much smaller.

Its light was fading.

The dragon sighed.

"The Heart is dying."

"If it goes out..."

"So will this mountain."

"So will every village below."

Rowan stared at the flame.

He could almost hear it crying.

Behind them...

The King slowly stood up.

His face was full of anger.

His crown had fallen.

His clothes were torn.

But his eyes were still filled with greed.

He picked up his sword again.

"If I can't own the Heart..."

"...then nobody will!"

He ran toward the blue flame.

Rowan tried to stop him.

But the dragon was faster.

With one powerful leap...

It stood between the King and the Heart.

The King's sword struck the dragon's chest.

The dragon let out a deep cry.

It did not fight back.

It only stood there.

Protecting the flame.

Rowan felt tears fill his eyes.

He looked at the silver key.

It was shining brighter than ever before.

Then...

Words slowly appeared on its handle.

"The next guardian..."

"...must choose."

Rowan looked at the dragon.

Then at the fading blue flame.

Then at the King.

He knew...

The next thing he did...

Would decide the future of everyone.

🌙 End of Chapter Seven

✨ Chapter Eight – The Final Guardian

The cave became silent.

Only the blue flame was moving.

It was very small now.

Like it could disappear at any moment.

Rowan held the silver key.

His hands were shaking.

The dragon looked at him.

Its breathing had become slow.

Blood covered the ground beneath it.

Still...

It smiled.

"You already know what to do."

Rowan shook his head.

"No..."

"There must be another way."

The dragon closed its eyes.

"There has never been another way."

"For hundreds of years..."

"Every guardian made the same choice."

Rowan looked at the silver key.

The words were glowing brighter.

"The Heart accepts only one guardian."

Behind them...

The King slowly stood again.

He laughed.

Even after everything.

"Let the dragon die."

"Let the Heart die."

"I'll build another kingdom."

Rowan looked at him.

He could not believe what he was hearing.

The King cared about nobody.

Not the people.

Not the mountain.

Only himself.

The dragon whispered,

"He was never meant to rule."

Rowan slowly walked toward the blue flame.

The key became hot.

Very hot.

The flame suddenly grew a little brighter.

It was calling him.

He took one deep breath.

Then...

He placed the silver key into the center of the flame.

Everything stopped.

No sound.

No wind.

Nothing.

A bright blue light burst from the flame.

It covered Rowan from head to toe.

The light lifted him into the air.

The King stared in fear.

"What is happening?"

The dragon smiled.

For the first time...

It looked peaceful.

"The mountain has chosen."

The blue light slowly entered Rowan's body.

He felt warm.

Strong.

He could hear the mountain.

He could hear the wind.

He could even hear the Heart beating.

Boom...

Boom...

Boom...

The blue flame became larger.

Brighter.

Stronger than before.

The cracks in the cave slowly disappeared.

The falling rocks stopped.

Everything became calm again.

The dragon looked at Rowan.

Its body slowly began to glow.

"My work is finished."

Rowan reached for it.

"Don't leave."

The dragon smiled.

"I was never the guardian forever..."

"I was only waiting..."

"...for you."

The dragon slowly turned into thousands of tiny blue lights.

They floated into the sky.

Then disappeared forever.

Rowan stood alone beside the glowing Heart.

The King slowly stepped backward.

His face was full of fear now.

Because he finally understood...

The dragon was gone.

But the Guardian...

Was still standing.
